Virtual Reality Takes Learning to a New Level!

What is virtual reality? I'm sure you've heard of it. Many of you have even experienced it at this point. A simple answer is that it's proof humans are awesome and highly intelligent (take that aliens!). No but seriously virtual reality opens up completely new world of learning.

Virtual reality is officially defined as the computer-generated simulation of three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with...doesn't that sound awesome? Not so fast because as great as it sounds, such a new invention had many shortcomings.

As a gamer imagine my disappointment when I found out that I suffer from simulation sickness. This is a nausea induced illness that many users of VR suffer from. That means depending on the condition of your mind and body, one may not even be able to access VR. Another barrier to Virtual Reality systems would be costs. Even if you can easily afford the Google cardboard feature that average learner may not be able to afford a fancy mobile device to accompany it.

3 forms of Virtual Reality are the following:
(1)Fully Immersive: an example of this would be THE VOID which is being developed to allow users to be completely immersed in any artificial environment.
(2)Collaborative VR: An example of this would be TECHVIZ COLLABORATIVE that allows 3D real time collaboration between co-workers in different locations.
(3)VR Social Networking: an example of this would be vTIME which allows anyone to spend time with online friends in virtual reality...as if we aren't antisocial enough?

VR can be especially helpful to students with special needs. For instance when working with children on the spectrum the goal is to have them practice skills in a real world setting. What could be a better way to accomplish this than fully immersive virtual reality. Check out how this would work on the link below.

  1. Drew,
You posted an interesting video on "Full Dive" VR. The questions the video posted at the end - How long before we are no longer human? How long before we give up control completely? - are so true. The way technology has been implemented into our lives, you wonder who is actually doing the controlling. Think about it...devices such as Echo, Alexa, and Siri have people just asking a question and the answer is given to them in a matter of seconds. You do not need to go look something up in a book or even on the computer to find the answer. Thus research skills are starting to wane. My own kids will ask me what a certain word means and I tell them to look it up. I make them get the dictionary to find the word. I want them to learn how to research and not just rely on a device telling them what the answer is. Because what if there is a power failure and you do not have access to these devices...what then? How will people be able to sustain themselves if their technology devices are not available to tell them what to do? Interesting food for thought I guess.
